What to expect from a podiatry home visit

A simple guide to how a podiatry home visit works, who it suits, and how to get ready, from High Steps Podiatry.

Getting to a clinic is not always easy. If you have limited mobility, you are caring for an older family member, or you simply prefer to be seen at home, a podiatry home visit brings the care to you. Here is what a visit with High Steps actually looks like, so you know what to expect.

Who home visits suit

Home visits work well for a lot of people, including:

  • Older adults and aged care residents
  • People with limited mobility or who find travel tiring
  • Anyone recovering at home, or short on time
  • Families arranging regular foot care for a parent or relative

You do not need to be unwell to ask for a home visit. Many people just find it the easiest way to keep their feet comfortable.

What happens during a visit

Madleen comes to you at the agreed time and sets up a portable treatment area, usually in your living room. The appointment is unhurried, and the care is the same as you would receive in clinic.

A typical visit might include routine nail care, attention to corns or callus, a check of your skin and circulation, and clear, plain-language advice about anything worth keeping an eye on. If you have an ongoing condition such as diabetes, your visit can include a regular foot check as part of your care.

How to get ready

There is very little you need to do. It helps to have:

  • A comfortable chair to sit in
  • Access to a power point nearby
  • Any footwear you wear regularly, so Madleen can take a look
  • A list of your current medications, and your funding details if they apply

You are welcome to have a family member, carer or support person with you during the visit.

Areas and funding

Madleen provides home visits across Sydney. If you are not sure whether your suburb is covered, it is worth a quick phone call to check. Home visits are available to private, DVA, NDIS, Medicare bulk-billing (through a GP care plan), workers compensation and private health fund patients.
