Choosing comfortable, supportive shoes

What to look for in everyday footwear for healthy, comfortable feet, practical tips from High Steps Podiatry.

The right shoes make a surprising difference to how your feet feel at the end of the day. You do not need anything expensive or special, just a good fit and a bit of support. Here is what to look for.

What good everyday shoes look like

When you are trying on shoes, check for:

  • Room in the toe box. Your toes should be able to wiggle, with a little space beyond the longest toe. Shoes that are too narrow can cause corns and rub.
  • A supportive heel. The back of the shoe should hold your heel firmly without slipping.
  • A fastening that holds your foot in place. Laces, straps or velcro keep the foot from sliding forward, which is gentler on the toes.
  • Cushioning and a stable sole. A sole that bends at the ball of the foot, not in the middle, gives helpful support.
  • The right size, measured later in the day. Feet tend to swell slightly as the day goes on, so try shoes on in the afternoon and wear the socks you would normally use.

Signs your shoes may not be working

It can be time to rethink your footwear if you notice rubbing or blisters in the same spot, recurring corns or callus, toes feeling cramped, or aching feet after normal wear. Shoes also wear out, so it is worth checking the soles and support from time to time.

When off-the-shelf is not enough

Most people do well with comfortable, well-fitted shoes. Sometimes, though, the way you walk or stand means a little extra support helps. A podiatrist can take a look at how you move, talk through your footwear, and advise on supports or orthotics if they would help.
