Caring for your feet when you have diabetes

Why foot care matters with diabetes, simple daily habits, and signs worth checking, general information from High Steps Podiatry.

Gentle in-home foot care for an older patient

Diabetes can affect the feet in ways that are easy to miss. Over time it can reduce sensation and change circulation, which means small problems can go unnoticed and take longer to settle. The good news is that a few simple habits, along with regular checks, go a long way.

Why feet need extra attention

When sensation is reduced, you may not feel a blister, a small cut, or a stone in your shoe the way you once did. When circulation changes, the skin can become drier and slower to settle. Looking after your feet regularly helps you spot and manage small issues early.

Simple daily habits

A gentle routine makes a real difference:

  • Check your feet each day, including the soles and between the toes. A mirror or a family member can help if bending is hard.
  • Wash daily with warm (not hot) water, and dry well, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturise dry skin, but avoid putting cream between the toes.
  • Wear well-fitting shoes and clean, comfortable socks, and check inside your shoes before putting them on.
  • Avoid going barefoot, even at home, to reduce the chance of small injuries.

What to look out for

It is worth checking in with your GP or podiatrist if you notice any of the following:

  • A cut, blister or sore that is taking a while to settle
  • Redness, swelling, warmth or any sign of infection
  • A change in the colour or temperature of your feet
  • New numbness, tingling or pain
  • Hard skin, corns or nail problems you are unsure how to manage safely

How a podiatrist can help

A podiatrist can provide regular foot checks, attend to nails, corns and callus safely, and give advice tailored to your situation. Madleen works alongside your GP and care team, and can see you at home across Sydney or at the Harrington Park clinic. For many people, this kind of care is available bulk-billed under a Medicare care plan arranged by their GP.
